Dr. Niklaus H. Koenig, Dipl. El.-Ing. ETH/M.Sc., PhD is the President and CEO of SwissRapide AG in Zurich as well as Project Director of the SwissRapide Express projects.

 

He studied Performing Arts at Mount Royal University in Calgary, electrical engineering and economics at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and completed his Masters in Science at the Swiss Federal Technical University in Zürich, specialising in railway systems and technologies as well as environmental and sustainability management.

 

He has worked for various companies including Sony, Philips and the Swiss Federal Office of Transport (FOT), where he was responsible for railway signalling, traffic management and telecommunication systems, the economical evaluation of railway projects in Switzerland, as well as international railway representative for the FOT in organisations such as the UIC and CENELEC.

 

In 1997, he joined the Swiss Federal Railways SBB in Zurich as Head of the Signalling and Traffic Management Department, where he was responsible for over 100 project planning, construction and maintenance employees, as well as for various construction projects such as the Zimmerberg Tunnel in Zurich. In 1999 he founded the European Euro-Interlocking Project under the auspices of the UIC and 18 European railways, which he led successfully until 2005. He is also co-founder of the International Railway Project Centre IRPC AG, which was based in Zurich, Switzerland.

 

In March 2006, Niklaus Koenig founded Swiss Railway Engineering SRE GmbH based in Zurich, where he holds the position as Director and CEO. In the same year, he also launched the start of the SwissRapide Express projects, aimed at the planning and construction of a new, ultra-speed Maglev rail network for Switzerland. In August 2008 he founded SwissRapide AG, with the aim to promote, plan and construct Ultra-Highspeed Maglev Rail projects worldwide.
