Maglev Monorail

The SwissRapide Express® is based on the proven Magnet Levitation (Maglev) Monorail  technology, successfully travelling over 30 million km and transported over 25 million passengers in daily service in Shanghai since 2003, safely and highly punctually.

Maglev Monorail, is a system of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles using magnetic levitation from a large number of magnets for lift and propulsion. The Maglev system has no wheels, axles, transmissions, and overhead wires. It doesn‘t roll, it hovers. The wheels and rails of the conventional railway are replaced by non-contact, electromagnetic support, guidance, and propulsion systems.

The non-contact support and guidance system of the Maglev Monorail functions according to the principle of electromagnetic levitation. It uses the attractive forces between the individual, electronically controlled electromagnets in the vehicle and the ferromagnetic reaction rails which are installed on the underside of the guideway. The support magnets pull the vehicle up to the guideway from below; the guidance magnets keep it laterally on track.

This technology is faster, quieter and smoother than any other wheeled mass transit system. In addition, studies have shown that the Maglev Monorail is the world leader for sustainable, cleantech mobility.

Essential system characteristics of the Maglev Monorail system are:

    • It is fast; point to point connections 2 to 3 times faster than classical high-speed railway systems
    • 25% less specific energy consumption at 300 km/h than high-speed railways
    • 50% lower noise emissions at 300 km/h than high-speed railways
    • Low operating costs
    • Fully automated operations make the system highly punctual.
    • The non-contact and non-wearing levitation, guidance, and propulsion technology is free of wear and tear due to friction.
    • The synchronous longstator linear motor is integrated into the guideway.
    • High standards of safety and comfort at all speeds
    • High but comfortable acceleration and braking power
    • Flexible route alignment of the guideway due to small curve radii and high grade climbing ability (10%)
    • Minimal land consumption; 6 times less land needed with elevated guideway, compared to double-track railway
